WE LIKE IT LIKE THAT

AVAILABLE NOW TO BUY OR RENT

We Like It Like That is a feature-length documentary film about Latin boogaloo, a colorful expression of 1960s Latino soul, straight from the streets of New York City.

Starring Latin boogaloo legends like Joe Bataan, Johnny Colon and Pete Rodriguez, We Like It Like That explores this lesser-known, but pivotal moment in Latin music history through original interviews, music recordings, live performances, dancing and rare archival footage and images

From its origins to its recent resurgence, it is the story of a sound that redefined a generation and was too funky to keep down.

The film had its world premiere at SXSW 2015, was the best documentary winner at UrbanWorld 2015, was nominated for a 2016 Cinema Tropical Award for Best U.S. Latino Film, and broadcast on PBS (America ReFramed) in Fall, 2016.

Where Is art?

On the walls of a tunnel under Riverside Park, Chris Pape, AKA Freedom, painted tributes to Michelangelo and Goya and reflections on his experiences as a graffiti writer and with the homeless people living in the tunnel.

The large murals, which he painted during the 1980s and early 90s, spread across 10 city blocks and were visible through gratings on the street. They quickly gained notoriety and the tunnel eventually became known as the Freedom Tunnel.

After learning in 2011 that Amtrak intended to paint over the murals, producer Niko Koppel and I asked Freedom to revisit the tunnel, hoping we would still find some of his works intact before it was too late. This is what we saw. (Role: Director, Producer, Shooter and Editor)

Jonathan batiste and the stay human band

On what seemed like an ordinary Tuesday night, New Orleans jazz virtuoso Jonathan Batiste and The Stay Human Band wrapped up a gig at Rockwood Music Hall and proceeded to start an impromptu second line through the Lower East Side to the after party six blocks away.

With the crowd in tow, Batiste on melodica, Ibanda Ruhumbika on tuba, Joe Saylor on tambourine, and special guest Wycliffe Gordon on trombone, the band clogged up the sidewalks and streets, stopping traffic as they gathered fans along the way. (Role: Director, Producer, Shooter and Editor)
